The Politics of Export Control Reforms (2025-2026 Team)
During the 2025-2026 academic year, I led a team of three senior undergraduate students with degrees in both political science and other disciplines (Jess Bober, Nuclear Engineering; Thendral Kamal, Aerospace Engineering; Paola Godina Salas, Economics) on a year-long study of national export control regimes and how the elevation of security concerns limits the influence of businesses. The students completed virtual interviews with legislators, lawyers, business leaders, and university officials in Australia and New Zealand and co-authored a journal article (in preparation for submission). This initiative was part of a cross-national project on the role of trust in contemporary trade politics. The Purdue team joined similar student-based teams from McMaster University and King's University College in Ottawa to present their respective research to senior trade officials at Global Affairs Canada and learn more about Canada's governing institutions through tours of the House of Commons and the Supreme Court.
Global Trade Governance (2026-2027 Team)
During the 2026-2027 academic year, I will be leading a new team of undergraduate students on a year-long study of trade politics. Once the team members are selected, the students will choose the specific topic and then design and implement the study. The team will travel to Geneva (Switzerland) to present their research to trade officials at the World Trade Organization.
